What Every New Carrier Should Know
Starting your trucking business is exciting—but it’s also a maze of permits, filings, and timelines. One of the most common missteps we see from new ventures is requesting insurance before their authority is ready to go. And while we *love* quoting for startups, we want you to be set up for success—not stress.
A Common Startup Misstep: Quoting Too Early
Insurance can feel like the “last box to check,” but in trucking, timing matters. If your USDOT/MC authority or key filings aren’t active yet, you can end up paying for a policy you can’t use—and sometimes, that leads to cancellations, wasted down payments, and avoidable frustration.
Real Example: When “Almost Ready” Costs Real Money
Here’s a real example: A new carrier recently came to us excited to launch his business. His USDOT and MC numbers weren’t active yet, and while we advised him to get those reinstated, he wanted to jump ahead and get quoted right away. He assured us the permits were being handled.
Wanting to help him stay in motion, we moved forward and bound his insurance—then came the curveball: his permits were still inactive. He hadn’t realized reinstatement could take a week or longer depending on FMCSA timelines. That delay meant he couldn’t legally operate, so he chose to cancel the policy. It was a frustrating detour for everyone involved—costly in both time and money—and one that could have been avoided with clearer expectations and a better understanding of the timeline.
Why We’re Sharing This
We do work with new ventures. We want to empower startups. And part of that is sharing real stories that help others avoid mistakes. Timing, preparation, and knowing what to expect can save you time and energy—and protect your long-term credibility.
